The San Mateo-Foster City School District is proud to announce that State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has named Bowditch Middle School a 2013 California Distinguished School for their strong commitment and innovative approaches to improving student academic achievement. “These schools have gone the extra mile to provide high-quality instruction that puts their students on the right path toward career and college,” Torlakson said. “Given the enormous challenges schools have faced in recent years, it is inspiring to see this kind of success in so many schools. Our future depends on meeting the needs of every student no matter where they come from or where they live.” San Mateo-Foster City School District Superintendent, Dr. Cynthia Simms commented, “Bowditch Middle School and its students, teachers, staff, and principal are very deserving of this honor as a California Distinguished School. Hard work, focus, and commitment toa strong academic program ‘where it's safe for students to be their best, to take academic risks, to respect and be respected’ have earned this recognition. Congratulations!” “I am pleased and honored to announce that Bowditch Middle School has received the California Distinguished Schools Award,” stated Bowditch Middle School Principal Judith Ross. “Our Team collaborates and engages all students in supporting their academic learning and character education. The Bowditch Team and community work in partnership to ensure success for all our students. It is our commitment and goal to continue to strive for excellence in educating and inspiring all students.” The 2013 California Distinguished Schools Program directly focuses on the right of California’s students to an equitable and rigorous education, and recognizes those schools that have made progress in narrowing the academic achievement gap. The program identifies and honors those schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap. To be invited to apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria including designated federal and state accountability measures based on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the Academic Performance Index requirements. Schools earning the Distinguished School title agree to share their signature practices with other schools and serve as mentors to other educators who want to replicate their work. Schools selected for recognition will be honored at award ceremonies where Superintendent Torlakson will present each school with a 2013 Distinguished School plaque and flag.
