Bayside STEM ACADEMY and Beresford Elementary to Receive San Mateo County School Boards Association Kent Awards

The San Mateo-Foster City School District is proud to announce that on Monday, May 20 th , THE Bayside STEM ACADEMY and Beresford Elementary School will be honored as recipients of the 2012-2013 J. Russell Kent Exemplary Program Award. The awards are given to outstanding and innovative programs either in the classroom or outside the classroom as well as district-wide programs. Applicants must demonstrate their programs promote student success, employ a high degree of creativity, and demonstrate transferability. Named after the past San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools, J. Russell Kent, SMCSBA initiated the J. Russell Kent Award Program in the 1980-81 school year. program blends Design Thinking with Bayside’s STEM curriculum affecting each disciplinary area, as students explore topics by looking beyond routine parameters, including all ideas and especially wild ones without judgment, and being creative in prototyping solutions. Students practice Design Thinking as a collaborative team which fosters habits of listening, being empathetic, and adaptable to client input about solutions that fit the client. This may lead to a second or third prototype helping students to learn to understand that “re-doing” or “failing early and often” is a natural part of innovation. Empathy, collaboration, adaptability and iteration are requisite skills for the 21 st century learner and global citizenship. Supplemental Spanish Program provides a solution to a challenging problem: How do we support English-Only students during English Language Development (ELD) time? All schools with English Learners struggle with how to meet the needs of both groups of students at the same time. Beresford meets those needs by regrouping the school’s English Learners for ELD instruction with classroom teachers and at the same time, grouping together the English-Only students for Spanish instruction, providing exposure to Spanish as a second language and building connections, appreciation, respect and understanding of another culture that is an integral part of our school community. The schools will receive their award at a celebration on May 20 th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Foster City.
