Hi. I'm Lory Lorimer Lawson. I have been a parent volunteer at several schools as well as at the District level. I have served on committees to select our Superintendent and several principals, the Strategic Planning Committee, and the San Mateo-Foster City Community Education Foundation Board. I have seen, firsthand, the absolute necessity of providing the essential tools and support needed to create a thriving educational community.

My experiences in the community have focused on life long learning. The San Mateo Partnership Advisory Council, the San Mateo Public Library Foundation Board, Nursing Mothers Council Board and the League of Women Voters all share the goals of informing, teaching and connecting people. With my involvement as a Hillsdale High School Drama Booster and volunteering with Broadway by the Bay, I have been able to support theatre arts for students and our community.

As Executive Director of Leadership San Mateo, Foster City, Burlingame, Hillsborough, (a Chamber of Commerce sponsored program) I understand that collaboration, inclusion, and vision are the hallmarks of strong communities.

I am honored to have the opportunity to represent you on the San Mateo-Foster City School District Board of Trustees.

I believe that if we set our expectations high, our achievement will follow.  We are facing challenging issues, but our district has phenomenal principals and teachers, sharp children and supportive parents.  I'm looking forward to celebrating our successes with everyone throughout the district.  But, these successes can only be achieved with the collective efforts of all the stakeholders in our district – students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members.  I can only be an effective member of the board if I understand the viewpoints of everyone.  I hope you will contact me and share your ideas and concerns.

My husband Peter and I have two daughters: our youngest is in middle school and our oldest is a freshman in high school (and went through elementary and middle school in our district).  I've served for four years on two elementary Site Councils, one year on a middle school Site Council, and many PTA Committees.  I, also, coach the Borel Tennis Team.  For the District, I've been on the Elementary Standards Based Report Card Committee, the Impacted Enrollment Committee, and the Facilities Advisory Committee.  I co-chaired the Measure L Bond Campaign in 2008.

Outside of school related activities, I'm active in National Charity League, play on a local tennis team, and enjoy reading and cooking.  Recently, I completed two four-year terms on the City of San Mateo Park and Recreation Commission.  I also served on the 2006-2007 San Mateo County Grand Jury.

Please contact me with comments and questions.

I am a native of Southern California where my husband and I met while we were both college students.  We relocated to the Bay Area during the dot-com bubble.  The move was supposed to be temporary but twelve years and two boys later, we now call Foster City our home.

I attended Occidental College as a Margaret Bundy Scott Scholar, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics.  I received a Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics at California State University, Los Angeles.  While working on my graduate degree, I taught mathematics to undergraduate students at CSULA.  I began my actuarial career at Deloitte & Touche as a consultant in the pension field.  I later joined PricewaterhouseCoopers.  As major accounting firms jettisoned their consulting practices, I became a financial analyst at Oracle.  I am currently a market performance analyst with GoInvest.

I was a member of the Foster City Mothers' Club from 2005-2010 and was a board member from 2007-2010.  I joined the Audubon Elementary School Parent Teacher Association in 2006 and have been a board member since 2009.  I volunteer in my sons' classrooms at Audubon.  I have been a member of the Greater San Mateo Kiwanis since 2010 and joined the board in 2011.  I am also the Chair of the Kiwanis Read to Children program.  Through the Read to Children program, I volunteer at Horrall Elementary as a reading tutor.
