Health Services Program

Our Health Services Program is responsible for the physical, mental and social well-being of students, and to help identify any health problems and make corrections with follow-up. The health services program includes those services required by law, as well as some non-mandated ones.

Health Services required by law:

  • Coordination of the immunization program to ensure compliance with State mandates
  • Visual and hearing screening examinations are provided for pupils in grades kindergarten, 2, 5, and 8 (and SDC students). Students (also staff and parents) with suspected problems in these areas are referred for further diagnosis and treatment
  • Emergency care and first aid, when serious injuries or illnesses occur, and priorities for action are determined
  • Health assessments of pupils with special instructional needs which may necessitate special education services
  • The participation of the school nurse on the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team is required by Title 5 regulations
  • Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) assessments are conducted for 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys with early signs of this problem.  Students with suspected problems are referred for further diagnosis and treatment.
  • Color vision screening is provided for all first grade boys.

Other essential, but not mandated services that are performed frequently include:

  • Diligent care of communicable diseases and supervision of immunization for school attendance
  • Nurses’ role as liaison for the Health Department for unusual and contagious diseases, including AIDS
  • Classroom inspection of students for communicable diseases, according to District policy
  • Tracking students with unusual health needs or concerns
  • Providing first aid training for new school employees
  • Training school staff in CPR as requested
  • Providing general health counseling for students, parents, and staff
  • Providing assistance in cases of suspected child and sexual abuse
  • Assisting with implementation of the Family Life and Drug and Alcohol curricula.
